7 Films that made me go the fu** : 2016 Edition

This isn’t my all time what the fuck just happened list. That is for another day.

This isn’t a genre but films that made me go wtf is this year. These films are always on the brink of being brilliant or just nonsense you don’t want to bother your head with. There’s a fine line between the two and I believe the line is of personal taste.

I’m going to try to not give too much away just the outline and if it’s the film for you or not summary.

NOTE: If you watch trailers of any of these films, there isn’t much point watching them.

1. Exam (2009) ★★★★★

exam2

You should watch it if:

You enjoy:  thrillers set in one room, the ocassion mind fuck, pscychology, films that tells you all the shit in the end in a two minute what the shit happened sequence (kiza soze) . Low budget films.
Are tired of: Predictable plots, characters that are only good or evil, thrillers with loads of guns.

Review:

Apart from the one black, one asian, one go getter woman, one ambitious man… and so on cast. There is nothing main stream or predictable about this film.

Job applicant in a room for 90 minutes trying to get the job, solve the mystery and well survive. It’s wonderfully done and thoroughly enjoyable.

2. Delicatessen (1991) ★★★★★

delicatessen-1
You should watch it if :

You’re looking for the unexpected, enjoy situational comedies and black comedy or if you’ve anything and everything terry gilliam. And you don’t mind subtitles or the occasional shit I can’t watch that.
You’re tired of the teenage post apocalyptic films, teenage comedies, superheroes.
How to watch it: I’d always watch this in winters and alone. Adds to the mood of the film.

Review:

Lately there have been too many post apocalypse films, sadly they’ve been targeted, tailored & marketed for the teens. The unfortunate thing with teenage films is they end up being a hero centric ordeal laced with romance. Delicatessen is none of that.

Delicatessen is a french surreal (think terry gilliam) black comedy. It’s a story of a man who comes for a job at a french apartment building with a butcher shop up front. It’s hard times and you never know what you’re eating. Each character is beautifully set up and how all of them are connected is a joy to watch.

Clapet: You think this is a safari, bitch?”

3. Coherence (2013) ★★★★☆

coherence-movie-poster-2013-large-fantastic-festYou should watch it if:

You love : Sci-fi films, you’ve thought about alternative timelines, think time travel is super cool.  Mystery films (not shalaman) , low budget films.
You are okay with: A bunch of middle aged people in a house (mostly) for 90min, Drama.
How to watch: With your geek friends. Screen doesn’t matter.

Review:

I think the only film in the list, that I’d be okay watching with other people. A bunch of 30 something having a dinner, talking, laughing, being jealous, cheating the whole lot. While there is a planet passing by. The planet has some mysterious effects on earth which will unravel with time.

The characters are really human and so are their reactions. The chemistry between the group of friends is wonderfully done and I really enjoyed the low budget handycam feel of it. It reminded me of cloverfield which I absolutely love. With the amount of shit that happens in it, it’s still a great film to see with your friends over.

“There is another theory: that two states continue to exist… separate and decoherent from each other, each creating a new branch of reality… based on the two outcomes. Quantum decoherence ensures that the different outcomes… have no interaction with each other.”

4. Sicario (2015) ★★★★☆

sicario-new-poster.jpgYou should watch it if:

You have enjoyed any of Denis Villeneuve’s work ( Prisoners, Incendies, Enemy) because I think he’s a sick bastard who just wants to fuck you, mob films, silence for minutes, great cinematography and mood films.
You’re okay with:
Violence, Gore, Unsatisfying endingsuneasy story lines.
How to watch: Alone but on the biggest screen you have at home.

Review:

“a beautifully murky, hard-edged thriller. Quite simply, one of the best films of the year.” – Empire

The most uneasy I’ve felt in the last half decade has been because Denis Villeneuve’s films, he lures you in with his cinematography and his perfectly synced radiohead soundtrack. Once he has has you he butchers you over and over again, until you pause and say fuck this. But I need to watch what happens next.

Having said that, sicario is the calmest of his films. It takes a dark but realistic look at how gangs operate (mexico) what they do and how helpless an honest officer is in all of it. Can you trust the justice system if not what are you going to do about it. With emily blunt playing her best it’s a joy to watch. Like most of the films in the list enjoyed best alone.

5. Frank (2014) ★★★★☆

frank2014You should watch it if:

You enjoy:  Ironic Comedies, Experimental Music, Dysfunctional bands, Absurd plots that don’t seem to go anywhere, Character Films, Mocumentaries.
You’re okay with: The main character never showing his face. Screaming and punching because drugs.
How to watch: A good sound system, friends if they share your odd taste.

Review:

Frank is about a (not famous) band who’s finding it hard to write music so they move to a village in the countryside to find ‘their zone’. You’ve got your protagonist (well sort of) who’s the youngest member of the group complete with his twitter ravings, the completely psycho girl (who might or might not be in love) , the europeans (who hardly speak or just randomly throw a line) , the manager who’s trying to keep shit together and Frank.

Frank well hmm he’s frank and the movie is about him. Anything more I say will just ruin who frank is. The situations are really good fun, the crazy antics are even better. If you’re up for a off beat film on a slow evening franks it. Why is it in my WTF list? Well because Frank.

“[singing] Stale beer. Fat fucked, smoked out. Cowpoked. Sequined mountain ladies. I love your wall. Put your arms around me. Fiddly digits, itchy britches. I love you all.”

6. Big Bad Wolves (2013) ★★★★☆

big_bad_wolves_ver9_xlgYou should watch it if:

You love: the mystery of not knowing the truth, human drama, psychology. In tarantino’s words ‘the best film of 2013’
You can stomach: Gore, very very uneasy storyline, brutal torture and murder.
How to watch: Actually this would be fun watching with a friend, not in a group. Not a big screen.

Review:

“Maniacs are afraid of maniacs.”

I love a film, where there isn’t a single good guy or well you cannot decide on one. And I’m not talking about a handsome archetype villain who went on a wrong path. Or that hot model that got jealous and killed the other hot model. I’m talking pure and serious evil through and through. Rage, Revenge and the lot.

It’s an Israeli film in hebrew set in a city where a series of brutual (I mean really brutal) murders have taken place. A series of events leads three men to be in a cellar and everything else is a matter of perspective.

7. Buzzard (2014) ★★★☆☆

Buzzard-still-4You should watch it if:

You love: Human drama, Metal, an unlikable protagonist.
You’re okay with:
A psychotic breakdown, loud music, a protagonist you might never love.
How to watch: There isn’t much point watching it with someone. It’s slow paced and raw chose your time.

Review:

So what does a low life slacker do when he’s out of money, has no respect for authority or relationships? He goes the Buzzard way.

It’s like a documentary you’re looking into the life of this guy who’s just fucking it up worse, there is no eureka moment or where it goes uphill. It’s just a great depiction of this guy.

Watch it when you don’t want to see your latest blockbuster on a slow night.

A bitter sweet life – Dalkomhan insaeng

This is how mafia films should be and how I love them. Since its Korean obviously a little raw, sharp Round the edges and leaves you with a sour taste in taste in your mouth. Along with the obligatory shit what did I just watch moment. Haven’t seen such a fine mafia film for a while, while Hollywood tries to turn Mafia films in summer block busters Korea is still doing it right. The difference between a modern Hollywood thriller and Korean cinema is that you question yourself is he going to live, is he? And often you are (un) pleasantly surprised.

The film follows a crime boss and his enforcer, who happens to be a man of honor in his own sense and not a big fan of well words. The film is a single story line but branches off, rivalry between different mafia houses, the chiefs girlfriend, the enforcer, love, revenge, a whole lot of kicking ass and broken bones. But simply put its a story about doing what’s right and love, more importantly this still is a better love story than twilight. Not a lot of films in this genre leave a big smile on your face when they end this with its irony does.

The other major difference would be feeling empathy, while sundance and other festival showcase the hard hitting dramas of Hollywood, pick a Korean action film and it still would make you feel something.

The cinematography is phenomenal it doesn’t go crazy with color tones and doesn’t care much about CGI its all really nicely thought out shots and well done stunts. There are some gorgeous frames that you don’t see everyday and the way they show you something happening without explaining the whole thing or body is just beautiful.

Bonus points for gangster film with no nudity and well there is gore lots of it, you don’t like blood? This one isn’t for you.

The action is paced really nicely there are buildups and then serene moments. If raid is action films headliners done right this is raid without the red bull. Music is a bit of a let down but makes up for it with a great sound mix.

This one definitely goes in my must watch list. Also won’t watch it again list just because of the sheer intensity of the film.

The Debt

A spy film without american spies involved is always a good start but sadly ends up being not as powerful as it could have been.

The story revolves around three Mossad agents two men and a woman and the mission they carried out. It’s set in two time lines the time of east Germany and present day where the daughter of the woman has written a book about the spy life of her mother and the mission that made them infamous.

I’d recommend this if you enjoyed Munich and tinker tailor soldier and spy. While the two mentioned films focus on more spy double crosses and mysteries. This is more of a drama revolving around the event and the layers of lies it involved. The acting by the two set of actors (different actors on the two different time lines) is brilliant and you feel touched. It is possible to feel or at least understand the circumstances, the risk and above the uncertainty involved undertaking these missions.

The drama does not only show spies as spies but people, something the american’s (Show) has able to achieve. It does get slow in parts and predictable in others. If you are looking to see a great spi film, I’d say go for Munich or Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy but if you’re looking for a drama where the cast of characters happen to be spies this is a good watch.

The Brothers Bloom

Guy Ritchie meets Wes Anderson to make something neither of them would mind owning.

Brothers bloom has all the right ingredients for a great action / drama on the lines of oceans 11 or the italian job. The oh how did they do that moments soon followed by the chop and cut sequence of oh that’s how they did it.

What really makes it is the beautiful cinematography and the visual direction, it has the panning angles with the raw jerky camera at times and most of all the framing with focus on the front and something comical on the back, it’s really nicely done. The comical bit of the film feels like something from a Ritchie/anderson film if there was one.

The story follows two brothers turned con men and their adventures rather the classic oh I’m going to quit but wait let’s do one last stint bit. The last stint’s mark is a odd but beautiful woman and the story follows. So yes the plot isn’t particularly original nor are the details. But what is original is the flow of the film and how all the pieces come together to make a good family watch.

If I were to change anything in the film around the 75% mark in the film, I would end it right there not play the whole thing through it felt like an encore of a comic standup but wait there’s more, the ending is something you could live with though.

There are great bits in between and the humour is done well and Bang Bang what a cool character. A silent asian girl with the bloom brothers whose actions speak louder with her addiction to explosives and guns.

A good watch

Nightcrawler – Meet the new psycho

I love Jake gyllenhaal more with every film that I watch with him in it. This is no exception.

This is a mood film and can be what you want it to be, its a social commentary about the media giving into ratings and how it forces you to pivot if you want to be in the business. Its a character study of something that can only be characterised as a Entrepreneurial psychopath, if patrick Bateman wasn’t in advertising.

Lou Bloom, a desperate man ends up as sort of a journalist essentially selling video footage of news around the city the more sensational the better. Its a story about the spiral he gets into going deeper in the rabbit hole and you discover the character as he changes or rather brings out himself in this misadventure.

I imagine productivity guru’s or self help book writers whose only success is motivational speaking being something like this. Its like someones narrating a marketing, motivational bible and its brilliant. The silence in the film is beautiful and powerful its not a haunting feeling but you get time to absorb it in and just at the right time, the character would break into a beautiful monologue and every monologue levels up the character for you. Think of it as reaching a level boss in a video game and every time its a bigger and cooler looking boss.

Its also about relationships and how he Lou Bloom deals with different people in different capacities how compartmentalised he is.

From the trailer I imagined it to be much darker but it turned out just brilliant, it goes right in my must see list in the american psycho category.

The sunset limited – Looking for the purpose to life?

Right up there with the greats like 12 angry men & man from earth

Rating: 9 out of 10
imdb rating : 7.4

Its often great to cut down all the glamor all Hollywood and just have a raw film with a couple of folks sitting down at the table discussing life and this sir just delivers that and up to the mark.

A professor tries to kill himself and the gentleman who saves him takes him home and their sitting at the table discussing life , God , religion and everything in between.

Unlike the above mentioned films (12 Angry Men, Man from Earth) it doesn’t have the twists and turns or tries to run towards a conclusion it’s a discussion leading to more discussions perhaps not as jumpy as coffee and cigarettes but more real to life and about life.

One a man of God trying to explain his beliefs while exploring or narrating his life events along the way, the other a read man with his lost hope in humanity and finding the reason of existence explained without the existence of God.

The acting is top notch and nothing less could be expected from the seasoned actors.

The story does not force you to a conclusion nor does it state a right of wrong but leaves you just like it should thinking about the whole thing while you lay in bed that night.

Predestination – You’ll have to pause and absorb the film. A LOT!

Some films are best enjoyed without knowing much about them.

Rating: 8 out of 10
imdb rating : 7.4

This was a pleasant surprise it opens up like a big budget scifi film where something major is going to go down, an explosion to stop, lives and worlds to save but it gets better than that turning into a beautiful, mysterious, tricky drama one of the films where you have to pause for a bit and get your timelines right and think about what exactly is going on. It’s like going to see cloverfield and thinking its a film about a party and how it unfolds is brilliant.

Keeps you hooked till the last minute you can make out whats happening but you’re never sure. Then there are the time hooks like Shane’s Primer or Jaco Van Dormael’s Mr. Nobody.

Worth a watch one of the best scifi’s of the year
